Last night the big tributes wrapped up here at the Santa Barbara fest with the presentation of the American Riviera Award to “Hugo” director Martin Scorsese. Leonard Maltin conducted the on-stage interview, which got started nearly a half hour late and still blew past the usual two-hour time frame as a captivated, capacity audience at the Arlington Theatre never budged and delighted in hearing the director’s tales of 50 years at work in the film industry.

“The Artist” and director Michel Hazanavicius further solidified their Oscar chances by winning the Directors’ Guild of America Award — a prize that has gone to the eventual Best Picture winner for the last 10 years running.

The 27th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival kicked off tonight with the world premiere of Lawrence Kasdan’s “Darling Companion,” starring Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it down in time to catch it, but I’m here now and ready for a few days of awards season awareness.

Nevada film critics tap 'Hugo,' Scorsese

The Nevada Film Critics Society has spoken and “Hugo” was the word on its collective lips. The film won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Child Actor from the group. Meanwhile, Tom Hardy received his first win of the season for his performance in “Warrior.”

Scorsese scoops second DGA nod of the year as doc nominees announced

Martin Scorsese received his second DGA nomination of the week — and his first ever in the documentary category — for “George Harrison: Living in the Material World,” while “The Interrupters” director Steve James received further compensation for his Oscar snub.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association has announced that singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, along with Leonardo DiCaprio and Olivia Harrison (widow of Beatle George Harrison), will participate in Martin Scorsese’s Music+Film Award tribute. DiCaprio and Harrison will present the award, while Dylan will toast the director with a performance.

'War Horse,' Scorsese win with North Texas critics

The North Texas Film Critics Association (yep) has gotten together to announce this year’s list of winners. And it was “War Horse” that came out of top, with Martin Scorsese winning directing honors. No were to be found “The Artist.”
