Michael Haneke’s “Amour” has won Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th annual Academy Awards. It falls in line with films like “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Life is Beautiful” which were nominated for Best Picture and won the award in this category.

That might be because it concerns itself with the very universal concept of love. But nevertheless, to Haneke, “there’s not a difference between my films besides the subject matter.”

As members of the Academy hurry through the last screeners they need to see before committing an opinion on the year’s best (for those who bother trying to get as deep into the stack as possible, that is), a number of races hang in the balance as extremely tight categories are sure to leave a few contenders feeling the sting of “also-ran” on Thursday, January 10.

The Dublin Film Critics Circle has chosen Michel Hazanavicius’s Best Picture winner as the year’s best film, as it opened on those shores in 2012. Every year it’s worth noting that a number of the original and adapted screenplays in the hunt for Oscar consideration won’t get the extra bump of a nomination from the Writers Guild of America (WGA). Reasons for failing to qualify include the writer of the script not being a guild member or not retroactively handling the requisite process, among other things.
