Ralph Fiennes is wonderful in dizzy but unexpectedly touching caper, which finds the perfect narrative context for the Anderson’s.

Posted by Guy Lodge · 6:19 am · November 19th, 2013
“Mud” was the only 2013 film honored at the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards, which otherwise flashed back to the 2012 Oscar race — as “Argo” once more bested its Best Picture rivals. “Homeland” and “Girls” were among the TV winners.

Focus Features has announced a shift in ideology, folding in FilmDistrict and focusing on a broader cache of product. While the label isn’t dead, the identity will most certainly change. Here’s an appreciation of the best that identity produced over the last decade or more.

'Cloud Atlas,' 'Impossible,' 'Life of Pi,' 'Lincoln' lead International Film Music nominations
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:38 am · February 7th, 2013
Sometimes I feel like it would be helpful for the International Film Music Critics Association to release its list of nominees prior to the Oscar nominations. There is no real “precursor” to help understand what the music branch might be thinking. Then again, as evidenced by this year’s slate, maybe they wouldn’t be that helpful at all. A critics group’s choices are bound to differ from a group of composers’ choices, and so it has this year.

The American Cinema Editors (ACE) decided there was no rush and chose to hold its announcement for nominations honoring excellence in filmmaking until after the Oscar nominations landed. This despite being ready to announce on Tuesday. I applaud them for that. Just because the Academy says “jump” doesn’t mean you have to.

11th hour thoughts on the eve of the nominations

Okay, so I went back and fiddled with some things this morning before getting on my flight to LA. I love how zany this year is. So much that we “know” about an awards season can just be thrown out the window. But of course, there will always be those who claim to have “the knowledge.” Don’t let ’em fool you.

The Online Film Critics have jumped on the increasingly-strong “Argo” bandwagon and handed the film its Best Picture prize for 2012. Paul Thomas Anderson nabbed Best Director after his film, “The Master,” led the way with nominations. Philip Seymour Hoffman was also recognized for his work in the film. Daniel Day-Lewis and Jessica Chastain won top acting honors and Anne Hathaway picked up yet another prize for her performance in “Les Misérables.”
