'American Hustle' wins big with New York Film Critics Circle

David O. Russell’s “American Hustle” was crowned the best film of 2013 today by the New York Film Critics Circle, capping off a nearly five-hour vote and marking the first critics awards announcement of the year. The film also received wins for Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Best Screenplay.

It’s getting to be crunch time for many studios looking to bring their product back around for awards voting bodies. Generally most critics groups and the like have just about everything, save for the really late-breaking films, by Thanksgiving. But the NYFCC changed that course a bit this year.

The New York Film Critics Circle has always held its vote sometime in mid-December, but no more. An announcement today that the group will hold its vote on November 28 signals an even earlier start to the precursor circuit as it preempts the National Board of Review.
