Iowa critics dig 'Descendants'

The Iowa Film Critics have joined and drowned in the on-going chorus of year-end kudos-dishers. Drowned-in because it’s all just a blur now. “The Descendants” came out on top, winning both Best Picture and Best Director. And there’s Melissa McCarthy, yet again.

Martin Scorsese received his second DGA nomination of the week — and his first ever in the documentary category — for “George Harrison: Living in the Material World,” while “The Interrupters” director Steve James received further compensation for his Oscar snub.

Utah critics award 'Drive,' '50/50'

The Utah Film Critics Association has chosen “Drive” as the Best Picture of the year. The film also won Best Supporting Actor for Albert Brooks and Best Cinematography. The group handed two awards to Jonathan Levine’s “50/50,” Best Actor for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Best Original Screenplay.

Florida critics spring for 'Descendants,' Scorsese

The Florida Film Critics Circle has tossed its hat into the over-stuffed precursor ring this year by picking “The Descendants” as the year’s best film. Martin Scorsese picked up the Best Director prize for “Hugo” while Michelle Williams continued a dominating streak by nabbing Best Actress.

“The Artist” has won Best Picture from the Boston Society of Film Critics. “Hugo” and “Margaret” were close runners-up, and indeed, both looked like favorites throughout the vote until the last prize was handed out.

The Cinema Eye Honors, the premier international documentary awards, announced their nominees in London night. Multiple nods for “Senna,” “The Interrupters” and “Project Nim” were predictable — a nod for “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” less so.
