Well if you were looking for someone, anyone, to just go the least bit against the grain, the Iindiana Film Journalists Association is here to save the day. After announcing nominees last week, the group has handed Best Picture honors to Colin Trevorrow’s “Safety Not Guaranteed,” making it just one more film to win such honors in a year that is spreading the love quite a bit.

Every year it’s worth noting that a number of the original and adapted screenplays in the hunt for Oscar consideration won’t get the extra bump of a nomination from the Writers Guild of America (WGA). Reasons for failing to qualify include the writer of the script not being a guild member or not retroactively handling the requisite process, among other things.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored its own tonight in the fourth annual Governors Awards. A satellite ceremony dedicated to Honorary Oscar presentations (voted on by the AMPAS Board of Governors), the program was moved off the annual Academy Awards telecast in 2009 and given its own space in the middle of awards season.

Today comes news of further casting on Quentin Tarantino’s western romp, as Jonah Hill has joined the ensemble. Apparently Hill was in the mix for a larger role in the film at one point in time, but couldn’t commit due to scheduling. It seems they’ve found room for him after all.

Your heart has to melt for Quentin Tarantino. The guy is nothing if not protective and supportive of his crews, many key members loyal to him over the years. Back in 2010, he was dealt a blow when long-time editor Sally Menke tragically died amid hot summer heats while hiking in Runyon Canyon, and today, the production designer of his hotly anticipated western “Django Unchained,” J. Michael Riva, has reportedly died at the age of 63, according to Variety.
