You didn’t think you had heard the last of “Beasts of the Southern Wild” star Quvenzhané Wallis, I hope. The youngest Best Actress nominee of all time was shrewdly announced on Oscar Sunday as the lead in the Will Smith-produced, Will Gluck-directed adaptation of the musical “Annie,” and today a release date has been announced: Christmas 2014.

The critics choose embarrassment
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:43 pm · January 10th, 2013
I apologized to BFCA president Joey Berlin after this evening’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards for being frank about it, but I couldn’t tell a lie: this year’s show was an embarrassment. Appalling, I’d go so far to say.

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:58 am · December 24th, 2012
As members of the Academy hurry through the last screeners they need to see before committing an opinion on the year’s best (for those who bother trying to get as deep into the stack as possible, that is), a number of races hang in the balance as extremely tight categories are sure to leave a few contenders feeling the sting of “also-ran” on Thursday, January 10.

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:27 am · December 18th, 2012
“Zero Dark Thirty” remains on top of the critics awards haul today with another Best Picture nod, this time from the Austin Film Critics Association. Oddly, though, the film won nothing else. “The Master” seemed to be more of a favorite, taking Best Director, Best Actor and Best Cinematography.

Just minutes after the Boston Society of Film Critics crowned “Zero Dark Thirty” the year’s best film, the New York Film Critics Online went and did the very same thing. They also spotlighted Kathryn Bigelow in the Best Director category (as well as Mark Boal’s screenplay), and, like Boston, went with Daniel Day-Lewis and Emmanuelle Riva in the lead acting categories.

Sacha Gervasi refutes 'Hitchcock' criticism at Fox Searchlight holiday soirée
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:10 pm · November 27th, 2012
Fox Searchlight Pictures had its annual east coast holiday party this evening at Andaz 5th Avenue in a nice second-floor spread with principals from the studio’s films — “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Hitchcock” and “The Sessions” — on hand. Spirits were particularly high after “Beasts” and “Sessions” combined for six Independent Spirit Award nominations (and one each for “Ruby Sparks” and “Sound of my Voice”).
