'Cloud Atlas,' 'Impossible,' 'Life of Pi,' 'Lincoln' lead International Film Music nominations
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:38 am · February 7th, 2013
Sometimes I feel like it would be helpful for the International Film Music Critics Association to release its list of nominees prior to the Oscar nominations. There is no real “precursor” to help understand what the music branch might be thinking. Then again, as evidenced by this year’s slate, maybe they wouldn’t be that helpful at all. A critics group’s choices are bound to differ from a group of composers’ choices, and so it has this year.

'Wreck-It Ralph' wins big at 40th Annie Awards
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:57 pm · February 2nd, 2013
This year’s Annie Awards did a nice job of spreading out the wealth. “Brave,” “ParaNorman” and “Rise of the Guardians” all won multiple prizes. Indeed, the one film that seemed snubbed throughout was Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie.” But it was “Wreck-It Ralph” that ended up with the most prizes, including the award for Best Animated Feature.

'Skyfall,' 'Best Exotic,' 'Ted' join the usual in ACE Eddie nominations
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 5:00 am · January 11th, 2013
The American Cinema Editors (ACE) decided there was no rush and chose to hold its announcement for nominations honoring excellence in filmmaking until after the Oscar nominations landed. This despite being ready to announce on Tuesday. I applaud them for that. Just because the Academy says “jump” doesn’t mean you have to.

Academy announces 21 qualifying titles for the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 2:07 pm · November 2nd, 2012
In addition to 16 of the Best Animated Feature Film contenders we have already thoroughly charted (and minus “Dino Time,” which didn’t bother — who can blame them? — and “Arjun: The Warrior Prince,” which I had been led to believe by Disney would qualify), the Academy has announced five more qualifying titles for a big ole’ list of 21. So that means we will definitely have a full slate of five nominees in the category, though that was already expected.
