Telluride: J.C. Chandor on the multiple metaphors of 'All is Lost'
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 2:21 pm · September 2nd, 2013
Like any artist, J.C. Chandor isn’t interested in tying his work down with one thematic takeaway. Indeed, his latest film, “All is Lost,” lives in the abstract and can service any number of perspectives on it. But for a guy who launched his career with the financial crisis indie “Margin Call,” one can’t help but wonder if this film, about a man stranded at sea as things go from bad to worse, isn’t in some way a metaphor for market collapse and financial ruin as seen over the last five years.

Telluride: Robert Redford looks back at the progression of an industry
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:52 pm · August 30th, 2013
It’s interesting seeing Robert Redford receive a tribute at the Telluride Film Festival. With Sundance so ingrained in his blood and his being the face of an entire institution, his presence here — albeit in a completely warranted capacity — feels like a touch of infidelity. But it’s too good an opportunity to pass up for a fixture of Hollywood history who this year delivers an absolutely amazing, sure-fire Oscar-contending performance in J.C. Chandor’s “All is Lost.”

Oscar winners crash the 2013 Emmy nominations
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:47 am · July 18th, 2013
I’ll leave it to those more embedded in Emmy history to tell us whether Oscar winners landing a slew of nominations from the TV Academy is typical or not. But it was nevertheless striking to me how many Academy Award winners popped up on today’s nominations list.

Sundance announces NEXT WEEKEND film fest to showcase bold newcomer talent
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:15 pm · March 4th, 2013
We were very proud around these parts back during the Sundance Film Festival as In Contention friend (and former contributor) Chad Hartigan won an award in the NEXT section over some stiff competition for his film “This is Martin Bonner.” The film was picked up for distribution last week by Monterey Media, but while you’ll have a chance to catch his work as a result of that deal, you might also have another opportunity at the Sundance Institute’s Next Weekend Film Festival, should it be a part of the programming (and indeed, it ought to).

Sony Pictures Classics has quite a few irons in the fire this season, as usual. There is the Cannes trio of Michael Haneke’s “Amour,” Jacques Audiard’s “Rust and Bone” and Pablo Larraín. There is the recently acquired “At Any Price” from Ramin Bahrani. There are Sundance hits “Smashed,” from James Ponsoldt, and “West of Memphis,” from Amy Berg. And now, there is Robert Redford.
