The César Awards aren’t quite the final stop on the circuit for “Amour” ahead of Sunday’s Oscars. There is still the Independent Spirits Awards tomorrow. But it’s probably the last opportunity for the film to have a big final hurrah of the season, and it seized it.

With the costumers set to declare on Tuesday, the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 60th annual Golden Reel Awards, announced this evening, were the penultimate industry group to hand out awards in advance of next weekend’s Oscar showdown. And it was “Life of Pi” that came out the big winner, taking two awards on the night. But 007 had some plans of his own.

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced its list of nominees this year, with its own fair share of unique categories. The Best Film nominees were “Argo,” “Lincoln” and “Zero Dark Thirty” (each also cited for Best Director). Winners will be announced next month.

With ballots in Academy members hands as of yesterday, the great settling is off and running. Various critics groups and top 10 lists have narrowed the pile enough that voters have a pretty good idea of the landscape in each category. More than that, “frontrunners” have staked their claim on the race, leaving precious little space for dark horses to maneuver.

Every year it’s worth noting that a number of the original and adapted screenplays in the hunt for Oscar consideration won’t get the extra bump of a nomination from the Writers Guild of America (WGA). Reasons for failing to qualify include the writer of the script not being a guild member or not retroactively handling the requisite process, among other things.
