The FSLC announced today that Spike Jonze’s “Her” will close the 51st New York Film Festival on Sunday, Oct. 18. “Her” is Jonze’s first film since “Where the Wild Things Are” and his first original screenplay.

AFI Fest picked a fun and droll piece of work for its 2012 opener in Sacha Gervasi’s “Hitchcock” last night. As I mentioned in this afternoon’s podcast, I found it to be strikingly emotional, though, for its depiction of an artist’s plight and the joy that comes with the release of bottled creativity. And I can’t help but wonder if Academy members may feel the same way.

So on one hand, yeah, the headline here is a joke. The Screen Actors Guild’s nominating committee, and indeed, any self-respecting awards-giving body is highly unlikely to pass kudos approval on a film like “The Avengers.” But in the case of a category meant to honor well-oiled machines like this one, perhaps they should.
