John Williams wins five awards from International Film Music critics

The International Film Music Critics Association has offered up the final precursor awards announcement of the season as we head into the weekend, which will bring the Independent Spirit Awards and, finally, the Oscars. And John Williams had a great day, it turns out.

'War Horse,' 'Super 8' win with MPSE

The Motion Picture Sound Editors’ (MPSE) 59th annual Golden Reel Awards were held this evening, celebrating excellence in sound editing. “Super 8,” you’ll recall, led the way with nominees (as well as with the Cinema Audio Society), yet failed to score an Oscar nod in either sound category.

This year’s list of International Film Music Critics Association nominees was predictably dominated by John Williams, who landed seven nominations across the various categories for his two Oscar-nominated scores: “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse.” Not too far back with five nods was “The Artist” composer Ludovic Bource.

'Rango,' 'Apes' and 'Transformers' dominate the 10th annual Visual Effects Society Awards

It was a good night for Industrial Light & Magic at the 10th annual Visual Effects Society Awards, which went down this evening. The company’s work in films like “Rango” and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” dominated the proceedings, the former surprisingly sweeping the animated categories.

Oscar Guide 2011: Best Music (Original Score)

While the music branch’s choices (or lack thereof) in Best Original Song could be considered shocking, the opposite was true about their final five in Best Original Score. Three of the titles are Best Picture nominees, the branch’s favorite composer of all time is double-nominated yet again and all but one of the finalists have been nominated previously.

'Hugo' wins big with International 3d Society

The International 3D Society announced its list of award winners today, and, well, I guess they pretty much did a good job of pointing out all the NON-crappy 3D in theaters this year. Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” won three awards.
