When the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced two weeks ago, there was one Best Picture nominee that yielded a great sigh of relief from me. It was less that I felt it was deserving (it unquestionably is, but to quote “Unforgiven,” deserve’s got nothing to do with it when it comes to the Oscars) than the fact that I was actually going to have something to passionately champion.

Jessica Chastain and Howard Shore to be honored at Palm Springs

The Palm Springs International Film Festival has announced its final honorees for this year’s Awards Gala. Jessica Chastain will receive the Spotlight Award for her work in “The Help,” “The Tree of Life,” “Take Shelter,” “The Debt” and “Coriolanus,” while composer Howard Shore will be feted with the Frederick Loewe Music Award for “Hugo.”

Will Palm Springs make it five in a row with Brad Pitt's Desert Palm award?

Brad Pitt has been selected to receive the Desert Palm Achievement Actor Award for his lead role in “Moneyball” and his supporting role in “The Tree of Life.” As has oft been discussed, Palm Springs tendency towards predictive selections for their honorees has only increased over time.
